Interior Design FAQs

A few common questions about Interior Design answered:

Architects and Interior Designers work very differently. Most Architects work with structure and building design and prefer not to work with details of interiors, such as kitchen and bath design, custom cabinetry and built-ins, color schemes, flooring specifications, and wall and window treatments.

Designers can create a master plan for the interior of your entire home or office, which can be implemented in stages, as your budget allows. The ideal design team consists of both an Architect and an Interior Designer in order to cover all aspects of your internal and external spaces.

Generally, six months is a good rule of thumb. Smaller projects can take as little as three months. Larger projects can take upwards of one year. Each project is different – from a simple consultation to a whole house renovation – so obviously the time it takes varies. We can give you an estimated completion time when you begin your project and adjust along the way as circumstances dictate. If you have an event or deadline, we address that at the very beginning.

Yes, to a point. We strive to utilize as much of your current furniture into the new design plan as possible. You’ve spent a lifetime accumulating things that make you happy. We find that your current furniture is a good jumping-off point for a more cohesive design plan. Often, however, some pieces just can’t be used. If they are of poor quality, too worn, out-dated or just not in keeping with the new design plan, we cannot use them.

You may have occasionally heard the terms for interior decorator and interior designer interchanged. However, there is a difference between the two titles. An interior decorator generally refers to someone who deals with finishes, surfaces, furniture, and wall coverings. Also, an interior decorator may work in a variety of venues from a design showroom to a remodeling retail store.

An interior designer is a more specialized career field, requiring a certain combined level of education, work experience, and licensing. An interior designer may create spaces for the inside of a commercial office building, design the lighting for a restaurant, or select the furnishings of a home. An interior designer may also deal with issues of safety like accessibility and building codes.

Whether you need a little help or a lot, from answers to a few questions on color selection or furniture layout to help on planning and completing a complicated remodel or new construction project, the advice and guidance of an Interior Designer is invaluable.

Having a professional Interior Designer on your team who has the knowledge and experience of countless similar projects as well as the information and expertise for finding the exact products and trades-people you need to get the best result for your project is priceless. Working with an Interior Designer will help you to move seamlessly and efficiently through the project, as well as help you prevent costly mistakes or side-steps along the way.
